What is the most underappreciated bird of prey?

The Philippine Eagle.

It’s The Philippines national bird. They are the only blue-eyed bird of prey.

They have a long lifespan. They feed on monkeys and various reptiles.

They are large—nearly the size of harpy eagles. They can cause serious damage if they want to—their beaks and talons are both extremely powerful and razor sharp, capable of quickly dismembering their prey.

They live up to 60 years and are magnificent apex predators. They pair bond and mate for life with their partner.

They are currently endangered due to deforestation. Fingers crossed that conservation efforts are at work to preserve them. They also have very cool hair.

What makes Danny Trejo such a popular choice for filmmakers, leading to almost 400 acting credits?

Being able to act is great, but a small lack of acting talent can be made up for by another part of moviemaking - casting.

For example, the well worth watching “Faster Pussycat Kill Kill” does not feature any great performances by the cast, but the cast makes up for it as they’re all pretty much playing fictional versions of themselves.

Similarly, in “Dr. Strangelove”, when Slim Pickens showed up on set to replace Peter Sellers as the character “Major Kong”, people were amazed how convincing he was until they realized dealing with him off set that he was pretty much like that all the time.

And Danny Trejo, just out of prison and finally off of drugs, was trying to rebuild his life as a drug counsellor when a client begged him to come to a set where drugs were being used everywhere. They were trying to find someone who looked like a boxer and, lo and behold, there he was (he learned boxing in prison) that got him a gig as a boxing trainer at a rate of pay he described as “more than I ever got from a bank robbery”.

And for the next ten years he kicked around and whenever someone needed someone who looked like a gang member, they called Danny Trejo. He looked the part and his past trouble made him dependable and easy to work with.

Then, finally, in 1995, he was working with Robert Rodriguez on Rodriguez’s first major feature, “Desperado”. He didn’t have to say a word, but his turn as knife wielding assassin really brought him to Hollywood’s attention.

But Trejo and Rodriguez remained closed, and Rodriguez saw behind the exterior to the total sweetie the man had become, so he was cast as “Uncle Machete” in “Spy Kids”, where he now plays the estranged brother of the man he tried to kill in “Desperado”, leading to a tearful reunion

That depth of performance got him even more work and finally, working with Rodriguez again, starting in two films as the same character

Except as first it was supposed to be a joke - a fake trailer in “Grindhouse” (2007). However, that eventually got him his first movie, and then a sequel.

Which meant he led a cast featuring Michelle Rodriguez, Robert DeNiro, Jessica Alba, Steven Seagal and Don Johnson. As DeNiro said to him, “when you’re first on the call sheet, you know it’s your movie”.

So, with a well known persona, a great work ethic, a willingness to work on his acting and being easy to work with, he’s the guy you gotta call.

What are some weird facts?

In 1980, a woman named Jean Hilliard in rural north western Minnesota, was involved in a car accident which resulted in car failure in sub-zero temperatures. She walked to a friend's house 2 miles away and collapsed 15 feet outside of the door. Temperatures dropped to −22 °F (−30 °C) and she was found "frozen stiff" at 7 a.m. after six hours in the cold. She was transported to Fosston Hospital where doctors said her skin was too hard to pierce with a hypodermic needle and her body temperature was too low to register on a thermometer. Her face was ashen and her eyes were solid with no response to light. Her pulse was slowed to approximately 12 beats per minute.

She was wrapped in an electric blanket.

The miraculous thing that happened was, 49 days after she was admitted, she was discharged from the hospital with no permanent damage to the brain or body besides frostbite.

Some people might be wondering how this was possible, but scientists explained this :

There's at least one possible scientific explanation.

In the article "Is Human Hibernation Possible," published in 2008 by the Annual Review of Medicine, Dr. Cheng Chi Lee of the University of Texas' Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology notes that

"Some mammals can enter a severe hypothermic state during hibernation in which metabolic activity is extremely low, and yet full viability is restored when the animal arouses from such a state."

In a search for therapeutic uses of induced-hypothermia, Dr. Lee found a "natural biomolecule," 5' AMP, that "allows rapid initiation of hypometabolism in mammals" and that

"may eventually result in clinical applications where hypothermia has been shown to have tremendous lifesaving potential, such as trauma, heart attacks, strokes, and many major surgeries."

It is possible that Hilliard froze so quickly that her body skipped the phase where lasting tissue damage could be done and her body entered a hypometabolic state that allowed her basic life functions to continue until she was successfully thawed out.

Parable of the Hidden Treasure, by John Richard Clayton Video “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.” Matthew 13:44–46 In the first parable above, a person unexpectedly discovers a treasure buried in a field. Imagine that you take a metal detector with you while on a hike, simply curious about what might lie beneath the soil. Suddenly, the detector gives a strong signal. Expecting perhaps a rusted can or an old nail, you begin to dig. But as your shovel strikes something solid, you uncover an old chest. With growing anticipation, you lift it from the earth and open it—only to find it brimming with ancient and priceless jewels, gold and silver coins, and other precious items of immense worth. In the second parable, the merchant is actively searching for a valuable pearl. He knows what he seeks and finally discovers one of exceptional worth—one that eclipses all others. In both cases, however, the response is the same: the man and the merchant each go and sell all they possess to obtain the treasure they have found. These parables pose two fundamental questions for each of us: Have I discovered the priceless treasure of the Kingdom of Heaven? If I have, am I willing to let go of everything else to attain it? Like the man who stumbles upon the buried treasure, many people encounter God’s grace in surprising ways—through a moment of prayer, a profound experience at Mass, an act of charity, or even during suffering. Maybe those people were not actively seeking divine treasure, yet in a moment of providence, the veil is lifted, and the beauty of God’s Kingdom is revealed. Once they discover the treasure, their souls realize that nothing else compares. From that point on, they are moved to reorient their entire lives to possess that treasure fully. The path of the merchant, by contrast, is that of the soul who longs for truth, beauty, and goodness, diligently seeking them out. The one who searches might spend years studying, praying, yearning, and pursuing what is of eternal value. And then—finally—the “pearl” is found. Christ is discovered. The Gospel becomes clear. The longing is fulfilled. Again, everything else is willingly surrendered for the sake of that one Pearl of great price—Jesus Christ. In both parables, the decision to sell all to gain the treasure is an easy choice. The discovery is so great that everything else the person possesses pales in comparison. But how many people have truly made such a discovery? Many of us are like someone who learns of a buried treasure in a field and, out of curiosity, drives out to look—but spends little or no time searching. Or we are like a merchant who is informed of a rare and valuable pearl for sale far from home. Though interested, we note the length of the journey and abandon the thought. Though we may have heard about the glory of God’s Kingdom, unless we truly discover it, we will not see the value of attaining it at any cost. We will only be willing to sell all we have—to detach from every hindrance to grace, every sin, obsession, and distraction—if we make the initial discovery of the priceless nature of God’s Kingdom already present on earth and the fullness of His Kingdom that awaits us in Heaven. Reflect today on this invaluable treasure, waiting to be discovered. Consider where you are on that journey of discovery. Have you heard about the priceless treasure of coming to know, love, and serve God? Have you read about the radical response made by many saints? Have you discovered God for yourself, through prayer and moments of profound enlightenment? If you have not, keep searching—the Kingdom is near. If you have made this discovery, then consider all your attachments, and willingly surrender them to God, acknowledging that nothing is too much to offer to our loving God in exchange for the untold riches of the life of grace to which we are called. My Lord and King, so often I seek the fleeting treasures of this world, including the illusion of treasures found in sin. Please open my eyes and help me to see You as You truly are—and to recognize the priceless value of Your Kingdom in my life. As I discover this Pearl of Great Price, grant me the courage and wisdom I need to surrender all that You ask of me, so that I may fully attain Your reign in my heart. Jesus, I trust in You.

It was something he would remember for the rest of his life

Before millions of fans knew his name, Cristiano Ronaldo sometimes knocked on the back door of a McDonald’s asking for food.

He was only around 12 years old when he left his family in Madeira and moved to Lisbon to join Sporting’s football academy. The dream was enormous, but life away from home was lonely, and some nights Ronaldo and the other young players were still hungry after training.

Near the stadium was a McDonald’s restaurant.

Late at night, the boys would walk to the back entrance and ask whether any hamburgers were left over.

Instead of throwing the food away, several employees would give it to them.

Years later, Ronaldo could still remember one woman by name.

Edna.

During an emotional 2019 interview with Piers Morgan, he spoke publicly about those nights and admitted that he had never forgotten the kindness shown to him when he had very little.

“We were a little hungry. We had a McDonald’s next to the stadium, we knocked on the door and asked, ‘Have you got any burgers?’”

He said Edna and two other women regularly helped them, but the restaurant had closed and he had been unable to find them.

Ronaldo then made a public request.

He wanted the women to come to Lisbon or Turin, have dinner with him, and allow him to finally give something back.

After the interview aired, Portuguese radio located Paula Leça, one of the former employees.

She remembered the young footballers arriving at the restaurant and confirmed that the manager allowed the staff to give them hamburgers that could no longer be sold.

Paula even remembered Ronaldo as one of the quietest boys in the group.

At the time, she had no idea that the hungry child standing outside the restaurant would become one of the greatest and most successful footballers in history.

But Ronaldo remembered.

Behind the trophies, records, stadiums and worldwide fame was still the boy who had once depended on the kindness of strangers for a late night meal.

Sometimes people never realize how important one small act of kindness may become.

To those women, it was only a leftover hamburger.

To a hungry child far away from his family...

It was something he would remember for the rest of his life.

Can you imagine helping an unknown child one night and discovering years later that he had become Cristiano Ronaldo?
