Our company travelled a lot in South East Asian countries and we found that Vietnam are very fortunate due to;
- The political stability has grown as Vietnam on Doi moi reform has dismantled the strict communism to seemingly socialist nationalism values. Vietnamese government allows ‘ease’ of doing business and inflows of ideas into their economy. After the war, Vietnam invites rich capitalist from their closest neighbours by quickly print their own money, offer the highest interest rate in Asia and get loan from capital Bank and traditional capitalist to invest into their infrastructure.
- Vietnam government allowed dual citizenship or multiple nationality to their diaspora as a form of reconciliation and healing process. This has created an influx of capital from Vietnamese diaspora that now have the confidence to bring their hard earned money back into the high growth economy.
- Vietnam is perhaps a truly non-block country in South East Asia that have no international trade barriers nor diplomatic dispute. Unlike Malaysia and Indonesia that did not have diplomatic relations to Israel or other preferential treatment. Vietnam leaders do study the law of their more successful neighbours and learn what works and what doesn't to be applied in their own country. Vietnam invites directed capitalism and lottery funds into their economy yet ban gambling.
- Vietnamese characters are confident and forward looking, with their historic win in gaining independence and pushing borders in indochina. Their leaders are tired of wars and in the 80s realise that hostility towards neighbours are pointless. They done diplomatic campaign and entering ASEAN in ‘95. This bring opportunity such as profitable fertilisers imports and rice export from/to Indonesia and seedling from Thailand and also influx of Philippines teachers, that bring bountiful harvest and population boom in the 90s thru 2000s.
- Vietnam have relatively good relationships historically with their biggest neighbours Indonesia. It is known that during Vietnam war of independence, Indonesia offer their island to house Vietnamese refugees, and UNHCR with Vietnamese also respected the support by returning the land to the Indonesian government in the 90s.
- Situated in strategic geo-political area, Vietnamese enjoys the benefit of preferential visa program and scholarships in Western countries and East Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, HK and PRC. Vietnam direct job-based education and allows various peace campaigns and mission groups from Buddhism and Christianity organisations to open schools and hospitals.
- Trade war between PRC and USA bring more opportunities to Vietnam, as Vietnam enjoys proximity and influx of industrial investment shift from PRC. ASEAN free trade agreements also further ease Vietnam to enter the ASEAN market with competitive prices.
- Although Philippines is the oldest modern country in South East Asia or Indonesia as the most populous, Vietnamese are more united and have lesser extent of societal conflict among themselves. Their memories on civil war are still visible. They really proud with their memorial museum and they care about the victims that lived among them.
