Why do foreigners have a different/negative view oF Duterte?

Profile photo for Mark Daniel T. Alvarez

You should say foreigners AND local upper middle class.

It's because of sensationalism.

In the years before Duterte. Killing/maiming of innocents by dealers/addicts/power players was a rampant and everyday occurrence. It was always in the radio. The only way a crime was reported on tv then was if it occurred near the news outlets, or if it was a sensational crime.

Out of anger and desperation. The people had enough. The Filipino people begged, and I mean Really BEGGED the former davao city mayor to clean up the Philippines like he did in Davao City.

He relented, and ran for president. With rousing speeches that always went straight to the heart of the problems in the Philippines. The police gained confidence to do their job. And the pnp started programs to improve their service, even before Duterte won the elections.

When he won, the world media had a stroke. Suddenly, addicts/dealers/power players became the targets of death, assault, incarceration, By their victims or family of victims that wanted revenge.

The commission of human rights came out of their holes for the first time to condemn the killings of these addicts/dealers. This backfired when it came to light that these dealers/addicts get representation from the commission of human rights, while the police who arrest and kill these known addicts/dealers in legitimate operations have to pay for their own defense out of their own pocket.(so duterte establishes a programme for police to get representation out of the government funds)

The changes are sensational. And the failing international networks like CNN use Duterte as a representation of evil incarnate.(after fawning over Kim Uong un)

. . . Meanwhile, us people who used to be scared but were forced to travel the streets of Manila feel at ease as most of the addicts and mentally damaged people that roam the streets and harass us disappeared. The roaming bands of children harassing us are reduced because of the curfew laws. Corrupt police are being hunted down by their fellow policemen.

I am quite baffled as to why these bourgeoisie complain to the things the president has done. But when I remember that these people watch international news, while being driven around in their Manila-proof vans. I just know, they are Filipino by name, but alien in nature.

I do not fault the foreigners. The sensational networks tend to be their only readily available source of information on our local events.
