Not difficult to answer. From the above map, geographically, the Philippines will have to work harder to lure tourists and boost tourism in the Philippines.
- Thailand’s tourism has come a long way from 8 million visitors per year 30 years ago, to almost 40 million (before the Covid pandemic).
Visitors to Indonesia, after exploring Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bali will likely continue to Singapore, some skip Malaysia, and go further to Thailand.
Ask Singaporean friends, where is the best place to spend a weekend getaway, other than JB? The answer is Bangkok.
Almost every tourist from Down under who visits Singapore, and Malaysia will end up in Thailand.
Western tourists who have Cambodia on their bucket list will end up visiting Thailand as well.
Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos are part of the mainland of Southeast Asia, and Thailand is included.
Visitors from India were the highest to Thailand after opening up the country this year. Most of them find it easier to move around Thailand. Bangkok and Pattaya are their strongholds.
Mind you, I have not touched on China, the ultimate whose favorite country to visit in Asia is Thailand.
In fact, I have come thus far, not any close to answering- Why is Thailand more popular than the Philippines? I may keep such reasons for others to answer.
However, my piece of advice is:-
As much as I like my Filipino friends, I know the Makati skyline is cool. Once the ‘Project of Century Metro Manila Subway’ is completed, Metro Manila will never be the same again.
But, however, the Philippines needs the X- factor, the like of Manny Pacquiao to break through and to dethrone the Kingdom of Thailand from being the number one spot in tourism…
That was how Pacquiao snatched the prestigious Flyweight champion from the Thai champ, Chatchai
24 years ago, that match shocked Thai bookies leaving Thai boxing fans in dismay, and Pacquiao finally rose to fame.
