José "Pepe" Mujica was the President of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015, but he became famous around the world for a very different reason. Many people called him the "world's poorest president" because he chose to live a simple life instead of enjoying the luxuries of power.
While many world leaders lived in large official homes, Mujica stayed in his small farmhouse outside Montevideo with his wife. He refused to move into the presidential palace. He also drove his old 1987 Volkswagen Beetle, saying it was the most valuable thing he owned.
Even as president, Mujica did not keep most of his salary. He donated about 90% of it to charities that helped poor families and small business owners. He believed money should be used to improve the lives of others.
One day, an Arab sheikh offered him one million dollars for his old Volkswagen Beetle. Many people would have accepted the offer, but Mujica refused. He said that if he ever decided to sell the car, he would donate the money to build homes for homeless people.
Mujica believed that happiness did not come from owning expensive things. He once said, "I am not poor. Poor are those who need too much." His words inspired millions of people around the world to think differently about money and success.
After a life of public service and simple living, José Mujica passed away on May 13, 2025, at the age of 89 after battling esophageal cancer. Even after his death, he is remembered as a leader who proved that true wealth comes from kindness, generosity, and living with purpose.
