This is Dr. Tetsu Nakamura, a Japanese doctor who has spent decades of his life helping people in Afghanistan.
Nakamura, 73, was recently shot dead along with five of his colleagues when gunmen ambushed his car.
The Doctor. Nakamura has settled in eastern Afghanistan for decades. He came to the region in 1984 to treat refugees and people with leprosy. He helped build a 70-bed hospital and several clinics.
The Doctor. Tetsu Nakamura said, "As a doctor, nothing beats healing patients and sending them home happy."
He later devoted his life to improving the conditions of the war-torn Afghan people, especially the peasants. For that, he needed to help people eat better and drink clean water, so he helped villagers dig wells. He drew on a wide variety of Japanese methods to channel a 25-mile canal. He transformed a vast expanse of desert into forests and wheat fields.
Dr. Tetsu Nakamura: “It helps an entire village. I love seeing cities come back to life."
This shows the barren desert before Dr. Nakamura started his transformation plan.
Years later:
Irrigate the canal soon after construction.
Years later, it turned into heaven.
Humanity is proud of him, proud of what he has done. He will always be a hero, but we are ashamed of being human because you were the best human and we let you down.
