A priest just took his vows in Brussels, his name is David Nas and he is a married father of three. A priest who does not obey or follow the “celibacy requirement”. Nas, a Belgian man, was born in Turkey as a member of the Chaldean Catholic Church which allows priests to marry and father children.
Such things, while acceptable in remote communities, would not be possible in major Catholic Churches abroad until a few years ago. Pope Francis sort of changed the name of the game. He’s been changing things quietly, step by step. Allowing for this sort of thing. He won’t say it out loud, hell he’d even deny it in public. But privately? A silent revolution is brewing, slowly, by removing some very unhealthy practices. It’s not an overnight change — it’s death by a thousand cuts. There are now, as of 2024, more married priests in this world than ever before in the history of the Church.
Within a generation, I fully expect the concept of married Catholic priests to become more and more normalized the world over. Hopefully within our lifetimes, the rule of being “married to the job” will no longer be required of priests. It’ll be so much better, for these men and for society.
