Truman’s cynical worldview and perception of brutal reality made him the king, or rather, the President of chilling quotes.
-“When you have an efficient government, you have a dictatorship.”
-“If we see that Germany is winning the war, we ought to help Russia; and if that Russia is winning, we ought to help Germany, and in that way let them kill as many as possible.”
-”Whenever you put a friend on the Supreme Court he ceases to be your friend.”
-“You want a friend in Washington? Get a dog.”
-“The White House is the finest prison in the world.”
-“All the president is, is a glorified public relations man who spends his time flattering, kissing, and kicking people to get them to do what they are supposed to do anyway.”
-“The President is always abused. If he isn't, he isn't doing anything.”
-“If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.”
-“I never did give anybody hell. I just told them the truth and they thought it was hell.”
Yeah, the responsibility of the atom bomb, prospects of nuclear war and the dreadful mess of post World War reconstruction will do that to a man.
He summed it up pretty well himself:
“It sure is hell to be President.”
