Why do people stare at you?

Because I live in a rural part of Thailand and I am the only foreigner in this area.

When I ask the Thai people why they are staring, they tell me it’s because they think I’m beautiful.

But I’ve found they mostly just like my white skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes. Everyone I know uses skin whitening products and the “trendy” girls wear colored contacts and dye their hair lighter.

I get many pictures taken at restaurants because they say they’ve never had a foreigner eat there before. I usually end up on the restaurant website or Facebook page.

I’m also about 6 feet tall, which means I look like a giant everywhere I go. The Thai women average around 5 feet, the Thai men are not much taller. It’s very easy to pick me out of a crowd.

Everywhere I go, most Thai people stare at my body. They think it’s too big, many random Thai women have told me I’m fat. They’re very weight conscious and say I’d be more beautiful if I were thinner.

They also stare because they want to talk to me. Everyone assumes I only speak English because of my skin color. I hear them speaking Thai to each other about how they want to practice speaking English with me. They are too shy to approach me 99% of the time.

I am basically stared at by everyone everywhere I go. All the attention was hard to get used to at first, but now I hardly notice it :)
