What do you not do when renting a car?

Don’t take the extra insurance, usually your credit card, insurance or road service org will cover you. Only take if you use debit card or don’t have the other items,

Don’t leave until you have walked around and looked inside the car and noted any defects on the rental agreement damage form. Take this back to booth and make sure they are aware and sign or stamp it. If you have preferred status with the rental they may send someone with the car or they the security at the exit gate will acknowledge it.

Don’t take the petrol fee option, much cheaper to fill it up yourself, of course if you are late to the airport may not be an option. Some dodgy countries you may not want to visit a local gas station.

Don’t leave if you haven’t discussed the mileage, option of one way drop off, going to other neighboring states or countries.

Examples: premium models (or specials) often have mileage restrictions per day or whole rental.

Discuss charges for not returning to rental location.

Many rental companies won’t let you drive to Mexico for example, the ones that do would require separate insurance.

I personally don’t leave until I’ve checked out everything legal is functioning e.g. lights, turn signals, tax tabs, this can get you pulled over and make you late etc..
