When Love Speaks Without Words

Two years ago, I was struck down with a severe bout of the flu—identified as the Hong Kong flu in my medical records.

The days blurred into one another as I drifted between restless sleep and feverish discomfort. On the fourth day, something unusual caught my attention when I briefly opened my eyes. Lying beside me, perfectly placed on my pillow, were five large, mud-covered bones.

They were my dog Jack’s prized possessions, treasures he had buried long ago. He must have believed they would help me recover or simply bring me joy in my darkest moment. As I lay there, Jack sat silently by my bedside, patiently waiting for me to notice his gift.

His quiet gesture of love and loyalty remains one of the most profound things he’s ever done.
