How effective are current efforts to deport asylum seekers from EU countries?

First of all, asylum seekers are never deported, because their application has to be processed. If there is a reason for protection, they will not be returned, but they will receive a residence permit.

With respect to refused asylum seekers, the returns are too low in the opinion of the vast majority of politicians. For this reason, the European Commission has now proposed a new uniform EU return system, the details of which you find here:

Commission proposes a new Common European System for Returns
Today, the European Commission is proposing to establish a Common European System for Returns with swifter, simpler and more effective return procedures across the EU. Announced by President von der Leyen in the political guidelines and called for by the European Council in October 2024, the new legal framework for returns constitutes a key piece to complement the Pact on Migration and Asylum which was adopted last year setting out a comprehensive approach on migration.

This is a proposed law (directly applicable without further implementation by Member States), and is subject to amendments and the adoption by the two co-legislators, the European Parliament and the Council. Given the public pressure, it can be assumed that it will be passed rather quickly and become operational in 2027.
