What is life in the Philippines like for an expat?

Stegath Dorr ·

I LIKE MUCH IN LIFE THIS DEPENDS

Expats go to the Philippines for different reasons. The stereotype is older American middle aged males who haunt the bars & certainly this variety of expat exists but there are also Indian women who go to the Philippines as money lenders as well as missionaries so motives vary & so do experiences

An American male who likes to drink in GRO bars will have a different experience than a missionary

II PHILIPPINES IS A GOOD PLACE FOR MIDDLE-AGED AMERICAN MALES WHO DO NOT WANT TO CARE (OR KNOW) ABOUT THE PROBLEMS OF THE USA

I was in Southeast Asia during the post-George Floyd Riots & was glad I left the USA. Many Americans who live in Philippines feel this way.

III THERE ARE LIMITED JOB OPPORTUNITIES BUT IT IS CHEAPER TO START A BUSINESS.

Most bars are owned & operated by Americans & Europeans.

IV THERE IS CRIME

Crime exists in Philippines. No question. It is more robbery & swindles than violent crime, although this too exists
