Short answer yes. For oral laxatives the challenge somes when you are so backed up and the poop is so big that the laxatives (specifically softeners) have no where to go. When the poop is big and hard it is hard for the laxatives to really get in there and soften it. The medication cant get around the poop or other poop in your intestines to get more twards the lower part of the rectum where you would want it to be soft. It could just be softening the poop that is behind the big poop you are tying to pass. Now if you are just a bit backed up then you should be more than fine with an oral laxative/softener.
You can also try streches/jumping jacks or just going for a walk can sometimes help get things ready to start moving. I would also do this right after a meal. not necessary but could help.
The other thing to mention is different laxatives work differently. Medication like miralax work by softening the poop making it easier to pass. While something like ex-lax (highly recommend every once and a while tastes like chocolate) works more by making your muscles contract giving you the strong urge to poop. Essically making your body push the poop out. If you feel the uge to poop but it is painful take something that will soften. If your body cant poop (unless you force it dont do that btw) or want a quick solution to just get it over with take something like ex-lax. So its less about do they work and more do they work for you in this situation? So yes they do work you just have to find the right one.
One last thing tho, if you are really constipated these might help but they might not get the job done. In this case I would get a enema or suppository. ik that it probably not what you want to hear but its true. Believe me these will work. Can’t promise they wont hurt a bit coming out but that poop will come out. if not, go to a hospital like right now. I have never heard of either of these failing tho. They are not as bad as they sound tho. yes it is uncomfortable but not the end of the world and you can generally do them on your own. You can also GENTLY use you fingers to help push it/scoop it out. GENTLY. dont damage the soft tissue.
