Apparently, most of the answers here have little idea what a real cage home in Hong Kong looks like.
For the record it’s not these:
It is these:
Often 20–30 of these cages are cramped within a 50 sq-meter flat in a half-century old building. There is no real personal space. Poor lighting. Poor ventilation. Easily over 40 degree Celsius during summer time. Poor sanitation. Not much dignity. It’s a place that kills all hopes for the future. Have a look at this story: Where home is a metal cage: How tens of thousands of Hong Kong's poorest are forced to live in 6ft by 2ft rabbit hutches
And renting one of these are not cheap - around US$250 per month, which could easily be over half of those residents’ income, if they have any.
In fact, some people would rather sleep on the street (not open street stupid, somewhere under a highway or bridge with better cover) than renting a cage home if they could do it, or if they were not eradicated by the government in the first place:
So to answer your question, it’s like living in hell.
Edit: wow my first 100 upvotes! Thanks everybody!
