It turns out that pets have their own last wishes before they pass away, often known only to the veterinarians who help them transition. Recently, Twitter user Jesse Dietrich reached out to a vet to learn about the most challenging aspect of his job.
The veterinarian answered without hesitation: the hardest part is witnessing how old or sick animals search for their owners with longing eyes as they prepare to depart. Astonishingly, nearly 90% of pet owners choose to leave the room when their beloved companions are dying. They often do this to avoid witnessing the heartache of their pet's final moments. Yet, what they don't realize is that these are the very moments when their pets need them the most.
Veterinarians urge owners to remain close to their animals until the very end. “It’s inevitable that they will die before you,” the vet explained. “Don’t forget that you were the center of their world. While they may have been merely a part of your life, to them, you are family. As difficult as it is, don’t abandon them.”
Pets should not have to face their final moments alone, surrounded by strangers in an unfamiliar place. It’s extremely painful for veterinarians to witness pets searching for their owners in their last moments, wondering why their beloved companion left them. They need their owners’ comfort as they depart.
Veterinarians do everything within their power to minimize fear for pets, but ultimately, they remain strangers to them. Don’t shy away from this painful reality. Think deeply about your pet’s needs, and endure the heartache for their sake. Stand by them until the very end.
