The previous answers are pretty much the run of the mill standard answers, each good advice. However, I suffered severely from large, very hard stools and had to dig it out with a spoon many times, as mentioned in one of the answers.
I came upon a solution that has been an easy fix and very healthy at the same time. I began cooking a lot with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which is extremely good for you. I started having a little less problem with my bowel movements.
I thought about what could be helping the situation, and started to reason that olive oil is after all an oil. Oil lubricates. That makes sense. So I started taking a tablespoon of the Extra Virgin Olive Oil at night before I went to bed. Excellent results.
So now that I understood the physics of the excellent results, I wanted to come up with an easier, more palative solution. I bought a big bottle of Salmon Oil at Costco. Salmon Oil is also very good for you. Regular Fish Oil could be used, but I wanted to maximize the nutritional benefit as I am in my 60’s and had two heart attacks in my early 50’s.
So now I take one of the Salmon Oil capsules at night when I go to bed. While constipation can still occure at times, the passing of the bowels is soooo much easier. A nutritional solution to a very painful and embarrassing problem. I hope this helps.
