What are ways to treat a bowel movement too large to pass?

Drink three glasses of warm water. It will work between 45 minutes to an 1 hour.

Let me start by saying, I am not a doctor just a guy who's dealt with a lot of pooping problems.

In cases like this where the bm is actually at your rectum, but is too large to pass, regular laxatives will have limited effectiveness. You have 4 choices I see:

  • Visiting a doctor:

If this is an extreme case where you haven't passed it in days, a doctor will help, mostly by doing the three things below.

  • Enema:

They make enemas that are medicated to simulate the introduction of water into the stool, and has a good chance on its own to break up the bm, making it easier to pass. They're sold in drug stores.

  • Suppositories:

They make suppositories that contain biscodyl, a stool softener and also lubricates on its way in. If you have hemorrhoids, this could aggravate them and be painful for a while. Generally they claim to work quick, check the label for the exact time.

  • Manual digital softening:

Sounds gross, but when you are desperate, this works, and is regularly done in hospitals. Basically you lubricate(petroleum jelly is perfect) a gloved finger and crouch over the toilet. Basically you push while using your finger to break up the bm being careful not to tear anything. This combined with an enema will treat basically any rectal compaction.
