Years ago, it was common for people to get great deals on unsold cabins the day of, or few days before the sail date. For security reasons, those days are over. I had a regular veranda cabin, and met a guy who got a suite the day before sailing for less than I paid. A met another guy who live in central FL. He would book last minute and got amazing deals. The year before he sailed 270 days out of the year.
Now, “last minute” means sailing in fewer than 90 days. You can get better rates on some cruises by waiting. For popular itineraries, where they anticipate selling every cabin, the price goes up as the sail date nears.
And I’ve never seen anyone get a free upgrade to a higher cabin class after boarding. However, on my cruise this past December, I was able to move from a regular veranda cabin to a “hump” cabin right after I boarded at no extra cost. For those who are unfamiliar with hump cabins, they are cabins where the ship flares out. They have much larger verandas than regular cabins.
