One of the most famous is Veruschka (May 14, 1939). She was born in Königsberg, East Prussia (which made her a German citizen), now known as Kaliningrad, Russia. Her mother was Countess Gottlieb von Kalnein, and her father, Count Henrich von Lendorff-Steinort, was a German aristocrat and army reserve officer who became a key member of the German Resistance.
When she was five years old, her father was executed for allegedly being involved in the attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler in the July 20 plot. After his death, the remaining family members were detained in labour camps until the end of World War II, and left homeless by the end of the war.
As a young girl, she attended 13 schools,
studied art in Hamburg and then moved to Florence, where she was discovered at age 20 by the photographer Ugo Mulas,
and became a full-time model.
Veruschka appeared various times on the cover of Vogue magazine,
and also garnered attention in the 1966 cult film Blow-Up,
directed by Michelangelo Antonioni.
She worked with Salvador Dali,
and at her peak, she earned as much as $10,000 a day.
Veruschka was a pioneer of body painting, and after she retired from modeling in 1975 she collaborated with the sculptor and painter Holger Trülzsch, creating a series of avant-garde photographs.
Performance by Vera Lendhorff.
