People came to his defense immediately, of course. Which was expected. But I don’t appreciate gaslighting and having people act as if my eyes deceive me — they don’t. I saw what I saw. We all did.
And if that makes you uncomfortable? Good. If it is jarring to see? Great!
That means your subconscious works as it should and you’re not simply making excuses for a man just because you happen to agree with him in some areas. I’ve heard people say “oh, Elon is just autistic!” as if this is an excuse. Absolute bollocks.
Because I know quite a few people, some personally, who are “on the spectrum” and even in their greatest moments of discomfort, even with the most awkward of gestures, they wouldn’t make such a gesture not once but THRICE in a single speech.
“No, you don’t get it! He was saying his heart goes out to everyone! He was gesturing at his heart, that was the gesture he’s making!” the apologist goes. And sure, Elon did gesture at his heart. But in the footage I’ve studied of Hitler, so does he. It’s the same literal gesture I’m seeing…
Why did he do it? I don’t know. Probably because he’s an insufferably edgy cringelord and he expected his fanboys would let him get away with it. He calculated that he’d be forgiven no matter what he does. That, at worst, people would go “Oh, Elon!” and think he was being ironic. Liking Nazism only the way a hipster ironically likes a shitty movie that’s “so bad it’s good”. People will always see what they want to see. But I saw a Nazi salute.
