It is a huge difference whether you go as a tourist to a certain region for a couple of days or whether you live there year-round.
Some aspects of Amalfi Coast:
- In summer, it is unbearable because the coast is overflooded with (cruise ship) tourists. Everything is crowded and the coastal road - the central artery - is one giant traffic jam. Each errand will be a nuisance.
- And parking is a nightmare!
- In wintertime, you often have cold and rainy weather. Not snow (happens rarely), but uncomfortable weather. And the region is not really adapted to cold weather. Insulation is poor and heating is often not efficients. Roofs may leak and houses might be damp in wintertime.
- Many things are closed in wintertime. The coastal road will be free, but it is still extremely windy and very slow. As a tourst, you enjoy the scenic drives, but as a resident you will find it bothersome.
- Infrastructure is limited. You need a good doctor? A hospital with specialized treatments? Difficult. The next big city is Naples, but Naples is special.
- Same with cultural life. Nothing close-by. And not international atmosphere like in Rome, Florence or Venice. This is Southern Italy, after all.
- Owning a house there and dealing with craftspeople and local authorities? Good luck.
Nice for a holiday, but living there?
