What happened to Albert Einstein's children?

Icon for Extremely interesting facts

His daughter Lieserl died of scarlet fever. His son Eduard developed schizophrenia while studying to be a doctor and was institutionalized.

Hans Albert became a professor at UC Berkeley, teaching hydraulic engineering. He died in 1973.

Mileva Maric Einstein, Albert Einstein's wife, wrote to the famous Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung in 1936 for advice about her youngest son Eduard Einstein, who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. There is no record of Jung responding to Mileva.

After Mileva's death in 1948, Eduard was essentially abandoned. He spent the rest of his life in the Burghölzli psychiatric hospital (Zurich, Switzerland).
