Cynthia Lennon was a class act.
I read her book “John” about her life with John Lennon.
The two of them met in art school. She describes John as bright, witty, a prankster, and young musician. initially, they were just friends. When they married, the marriage was kept a secret so as not to hurt John’s image.
Cynthia was very much a part of John Lennon’s early life and his climb as the Beatles climbed the mountain of world fame.
The parts in her book about John as a husband and father are less flattering, but appear to be truthful. John could be angry, very jealous, possessive, and dismissive.
Cynthia lost her marriage when she found John & Yoko Ono (who was dressed in Cynthia dressing gown) having breakfast in her home.
She describes John as not being much of a father to their son Julian. Cynthia, according to Julian and everyone who knew her, was a wonderful mother.
I also listened to the Audible version of Cynthia’s book recently and you can hear in her own words and from her tone of voice just how much she loved John, despite his hurting her. You can hear the pain in her voice as she describes learning about John’s murder in December 1980, more than 5,000 miles away.
Yes, Cynthia, who passed in 2015, was a class act. Her son wrote a beautiful song in tribute to his mother:
