Putting pressed garlic in an ice cube tray and storing it in my freezer.
My mother-in-law had given me and my boyfriend a big bag of garlic bulbs. It looked exactly like one of the nets in the box below:
We knew right away that we would not be able to finish all those garlic bulbs in time. Since we don't like to waste food, I searched the internet for tips to keep the garlic from spoiling for as long as possible.
On one website, it was suggested to press all the garlic and put it in an ice cube tray.
Not only would it increase the time you can store it, it would also be easy to add to a dish since it was already pressed. 1 cube of garlic would consist of around two garlic gloves, exactly the amount we normally use to bring certain dishes we enjoy to taste. So far so good.
What they didn't mention, however, is that the taste and smell of the garlic would penetrate the whole freezer and all the other foods we kept in there. This meant that food items like frozen berries and ice cream all had a garlic taste. And no, it was not subtle. Even after months we haven’t got rid of the garlic odor completely..
We didn’t want to waste anything. That was the whole idea of freezing the garlic in the first place and so we still consumed the food items but it has been a struggle especially since we have a big freezer with four drawers.
Garlic vanilla ice cream anyone?
