From 1975 to 1979, Pol Pot was the ruler of Cambodia. He wanted all his supporters to become peasants.
He used his power to make people who lived in the cities move to rural areas where they had to work on farms owned by the state. He moved everyone, including children, old people, and hospital patients.
He enslaved his people and made them obey him.
He abolished money, private property, and religion to make everyone the same.
He made everyone wear black clothes, as shown in the image above. He tortured people and took away their rights.
He killed those who opposed him, mostly with an axe to save bullets.
He wanted to build a communist society where the state owned everything. He wanted total power.
In four years, he killed a quarter of Cambodia’s population and buried them in mass graves. This is called the Cambodian genocide. 23,745 mass graves have been discovered with countless number of skulls.
The brutal leadership of Pol Pot led to the death of about 1.3 million Cambodians.
