Pancreatic cancer can cause a variety of symptoms, including:
- Pain A dull ache in the upper abdomen or back that may come and go, but can become more constant and last longer as the tumor grows. The pain may be worse when lying down or after eating, but can often be relieved by leaning forward.
- Jaundice A yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes caused by a buildup of bilirubin in the blood. Other symptoms include dark urine and light or clay-colored stools.
- Weight loss Cancer-induced weight loss, also known as cancer cachexia, can cause the body to burn more calories than usual, break down muscle, and decrease appetite.
- Nausea and vomiting These may occur right after treatment, several days later, or possibly not at all.
- Itching Itching all over the body, particularly at night.
- Other symptoms Fatigue, abnormal physical weakness, gallbladder or liver enlargement, blood clots, and diabetes.
Pancreatic cancer often doesn't cause symptoms until the disease is advanced, or the symptoms may be hard to spot. You should discuss any new pain-related symptoms with your doctor.
