As we grow older, in general and on average our metabolism declines and our bodies start producing less hormones, specifically testosterone for men and estrogen for women.
Testosterone can help take care of a lot of eating indiscretions when we are young and a high metabolism can quickly dispense with a few hundred extra calories a day. When those failsafes are taken away there are all kinds of vicious circles that body can enter that are no longer healthy.
So when the Doc tells you to do this and don’t do that, he is trying to help you out. But trying is the key word here. Most Docs are fairly intelligent and they think themselves as an authority figure. So, most of them are heavy on the telling you what not to do, and light on the telling you what to do. Telling someone to not do something is often the worst thing to do. If I told you to not think of a green gorilla, what is the first thing your unconscious mind does? It brings up a green gorilla in your mind.
So you are going to go around with green gorilla in your mind and you are more likely to do, eat, and drink Green Gorilla stuff. That is because our minds work well on positive thoughts, and not so good on negatives.
So, unlike most Doctors I’ve met, I’m going to give you some positive things I do. You can research them for your self to see if they are suitable for you.
(1) I keep myself regular by eating fiber. Apples are good. I also use Whole Psyllium Husks. I take two teaspoons full a day, but I had to start with one because when I introduced myself to them, I kind of had a tendency to plug myself up. So, take it slow and build up over time if you choose to use my methods. (You might want to ask your Doctor first in case you aren’t a good subject.) Also, I use the whole ones because the derivative products are usually much more potent and they also tend to plug me up. The whole ones are much milder in my experience.
(2) I try to hydrate properly. For numerous reasons, as we get older, we tend to not drink pure clear water as often and when we drink fluids we often choose things that are somewhat diuretic and actually dry us up. Sadly, not drinking pure clear water has been found to be a huge mistake. Like the fiber, hydration gives one’s body a means of getting unwanted stuff out of the body to balance things out properly. It is also important to drink a lot of water if one consumes a lot of fiber because that fiber needs to be hydrated to do its wonders.
Additionally, a popular weight loss program says that if you don’t hydrate properly, you tend to eat more calorie laden food to try to get hydration from the food. So drinking water can be a very good way to limit ingesting some things that might cause various diseases like obesity.
(3) I take quite a few supplements, but my top two favorites are fish oil and resveratrol. Fish oil is supposed to reduce inflammation and provide a number of good things to boot, and resveratrol is though by some to be just short of a miracle substance. I use soluble resveratrol lozenges because the buccal delivery system seems to work much better than pills that go into the stomach where stomach acid immediately destroys about 97% of the resveratrol.
Anyway, I’m not a doctor and I’m not giving advice, but offering a few different ideas for readers to research themselves.
As always I welcome comments both supporting my answers and challenging them.
Thanks for reading.
