“Which is better for weight gain, carbs or protein?”

For anyone who thrives on low carb, carbs cause the most gain. That’s around a third of people. I am one of them.

For anyone who thrives on low fat, fat causes the most gain. That’s around a third of people. I am NOT one of them.

Calorie for calorie, one calorie of carb is better and faster to fuel new lean growth than one calorie of protein. This is the opposite of the obvious so vast numbers of people get this completely wrong.

Calorie for calorie, one calorie of fat is better and slower to fuel new lean growth than one calorie of protein. This is roughly in line with the obvious thanks to low fat pressure from the media.

There is so much pressure int he media to eat protein that the typical westerner eats 1.5 to 2 times their optimal protein. Protein is crucial if you don’t get enough, but in the west that’s only anorexics.

Protein is very good at suppressing fat loss. This is one of the reasons we have an epidemic of obesity. We are pressured to tune our macros incorrectly so we gain fat. We are pressured to eat excess protein so our fat loss is suppressed.

But protein isn’t all that good at causing fat gain. And we already eat far more protein than we need to gain lean.
