The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, was recently trolled on Chinese social media rather relentlessly for wearing a “Made in China” dress. You cannot really confidently claim, as a government, to not need Chinese products… while even the people representing your own government cannot help but wear said products.
I’d feel confident too if I were an American supporter of the trade war and Xi Jinping’s representative at some press conference was dressed like the clown from McDonalds. It would make any threats and bravado about “not needing America” look weak, impotent and pointless. A lot of MAGA merchandise, too, is made in China. So the more of those ridiculous little red “Make America Great Again” hats Trump sells to his army of useful idiots, the more China makes bank. Making America great… one Chinese product at a time.
Within mere days of announcing heavy tariffs on Chinese products, Trump backpedaled, removing tariffs from electronics… China still didn’t budge. He then said he “hoped Xi would call him”. No call came. Whoever blinks first, loses. Trump blinked. Repeatedly.
