Why am I of the opinion that Israel is not a real nation?

Because you don’t understand how nations are formed. You probably think that because Palestinians were displaced and forced to flee when Israel was founded in 1948, this means it is not a “legitimate nation” for some reason…

This is nonsense, of course — many nations are, historically, founded on a basis of conquest. Was it not through the kidnapping of a rival tribe’s women that mighty Rome came to be?

Any “real nation” will have in its history books a little massacare, a little human rights violations and some scandalous and unpleasant episodes. This is normal. Not good, but to be expected.

You don’t get to say: “I dislike the way the European settlers who went to the Americas treated the Native American tribes… therefore, I have concluded that America is not a real nation”. Because that conclusion is ridiculous — regardless of your own personal feelings on how a nation was founded and how it came into existence, a nation is still a nation whether you like it or not. It does not require your approval nor is moral righteousness needed for it to be “legitimate”.

Israel is a real nation. You are free to dislike it, as a nation. To be displeased by its existence and to study its history and be appalled. That is your right, and more power to you for stating it. But disliking a nation doesn’t mean shit — I dislike Russia quite a lot, especially with the way it conducts itself lately, and my dislike doesn’t suddenly make it “not a real nation”, that’s ridiculous.
