What are the most effective self-defense moves for beginners to learn?

My top 5 for everyone not just beginners.

  1. Global awareness. Pay attention to everything and everyone around you at all times. If you’re walking down a street crowded with people take out your earbuds. Stop texting or talking on your phone. Look around. Tune in to your surroundings. So you don’t walk naively into a bad situation.
  2. Situational awareness. Pay attention to specifically what is going on around you. If you hear an argument, see a commotion, see some rough looking guys tune in. Size up what’s happening. Look for how to get out if you need to. Make sure you’re not caught in the middle of someone else’s mess.
  3. Avoidance. If you suddenly find yourself in a bad place, around bad people or a deteriorating situation get out. Now. Don’t wait to see what’s going to happen. Often by the time it happens it’s too late. Don’t wait because you feel stupid leaving. Better to feel stupid for leaving than stupid for ending up in the hospital.
  4. Project confidence. Everywhere. All the time. Stand up tall. Walk confidently. Look around. Act confident. Predators look for easy prey. They attack those who are not paying any attention and look like they’d rather be home hiding than out in public. Even if you feel that way don’t look like it and get back home safely..
  5. Defuse rather than defend. If you find yourself in a confrontation try to defuse it. Swallow your ego. Apologize even if you’re not wrong. Talk pleasantly even if you feel like yelling. Act congenial even if you feel like punching out the bully confronting you. Better to swallow your pride than your teeth.

No matter how good you are in self defense techniques a fight on the street can go horribly wrong. So never do it unless you absolutely can’t avoid it.

The absolute most effective self defense technique is to never need to defend yourself.
