As someone who remembers Twitter before Musk, I’d say in all honesty he probably improved it in some ways…
Twitter, before Musk, was insanely and ridiculously racist against white people. It allowed users to say the most disgusting things.
And it was seen as A-okay as long as the recipient was white, male, or heterosexual as no member of a “privileged class” needed any protecting. Saying a similarly nasty, mean-spirited thing about any other race of people would get you banned before you could count to ten. But shit like this was allowed:
The woman writing all this vile, racist garbage is a “journalist” named Sarah Jeong[1] She worked for the New York Times among many other publications. There was a culture on Twitter, for years, of “anything goes… as long as the nasty shit you say is directed at someone privileged, or else it’d be racist and awful and it will be removed”. Frankly, the double standards were infuriating.
Elon Musk came and replaced one bias with another. From a far-left echo chamber, Twitter (X) turned into a right-wing echo chamber. It is still biased, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t biased before. It just offends different people now but the site has always been horrible, one way or another. He is just continuing that legacy of awfulness in a slightly different direction.
