Why is it so hard to secure a tourist visa to go to the USA if you are coming from the Philippines?

Because most Filipino applicants apply for wrong type of visa, and they don't know the exact definition of the visa category they're applying for, which resulted to high percentage of visa refusals.

Few examples of applicants who applied for a B1/B2 tourist visa:

  1. A skilled worker who considers the USA as a greener pasture, and tries to apply for a tourist (B2) visa, for the purpose of stepping into the American soil and search for employment there.
  2. A Filipina wants to meet her American boyfriend whom she has known online and not even met in person, so there are greater chances that she will stay with him and no longer have the intentions of going back home. This is so common in the Philippines, and US consular officers are so familiar with this game.
  3. A person who has family members in the US who are out of status (overstayed their visas), so it is (also) unlikely that he will be issued a visa. Guilt by association.
  4. A professor who has a high educational background, but he couldn't explain clearly in the interview the purpose of his travel to the US.
  5. A young man who submitted purported documents in support of his application, not knowing that the consular officers are trained well in detecting fraud.
  6. A wealthy businessman who has paid for the assistance of an immigration consultant - so he was given some tricks and advices on how to answer the interview questions - but still refused for a visa.
  7. An old lady, who actually pleaded for a visa during the interview with the visa officer - with the intention of visiting her grandchildren in the US. She has made herself so desperate to go to the US, so she got refused.

Notes:

The social, economic and political status of the country, as well as the behavior of its fellow citizens in using the visa properly, have an impact to the rate of visa denials/refusals.

The process of applying for a non-immigrant tourist visa is available at the DOS Official Website: travel.state.gov, the instructions are clear, transparent and direct to the point.

Immigration consultants might not help with the application. Their self-made tricks, templates and scripts are commonly used by desperate applicants, which, can be easily spotted by the consular officer.

If you have immediate relatives in the US, it will be so hard to convince the consular officer that you will be back to your home country after your short stay. Recent statistics show that a lot of Filipinos have overstayed their visas and tried to skip the long lines of family-based immigrant petitions.

Applying for a tourist visa is - probably - similar to taking a board (licensure) exam. You do not increase the chances of getting it when you apply several times. In fact, the chances become slimmer, as it shows on the previous records that you're so desperate for a visa. If you're really qualified, you will surely get it in one shot.

Do not lie in your application. Tell the truth. Walang sikreto sa pagkuha ng US Visa.

Anyone who tells you that you need to bring supporting documents (such as invitation letters, bank certificate, land titles, etc.) during your interview is wrong. The applicant should stand on his/her own - in front of the consular officer - to convince and prove that he/she is not an intending immigrant.
