Of course, it is not overrated.
First, Italy is very diverse. It has the Alps with dramatic scenery and excellent ski areas, it has those very beautiful lakes surrounded by steep mountains, it has rolling hills with olive orchards and vineyards, it has an incredibly long coastline (including Sardinia and Sicily and some smaller islands) with all kinds of coast, from wide, sandy beaches to rocky coves, it has rich ancient Greek, Etrurian and Roman archeology, it has thousands of picturesque villages, some dating from medieval times, it has dozens of beautiful cities with stunning architecture from all eras - Roman, romanesque, gothic, renaissance, baroque, classicism, modern. It has Rome, Florence and Venice - these three cities alone make Italy a worthy travel destination. And I could add Milan, Torino, Bologna, Siena, Verona, Pisa, Palermo, Padova, even Naples and I am still leaving out many more gems.
In Italy, you find natural beauty, treasures or art and architecture, culinary delights, music - whatever you wish.
