Why are many Filipinos ashamed of being Filipinos?

  1. The white worship that is prevalent in the Filipino culture. I am anti imperialist and proud of my heritage, proud of being Asian, so this behavior is really shameful. Even though America and Spain, both white countries killed thousands of Filipinos, most Filipinos still look at these two with favor. I don’t get it, Catholicism with its white idols and iconography must have something to do with it, it’s all psychological. Filipinos would deny any kinship with the Chinese even though 15–35% of Filipino DNA is Han Chinese, and instead will tell you that they are part Spanish even though there is barely any Spanish in the Filipino DNA’s genetic make up. Spaniards subjugate the Filipinos, they weren’t friends.
  2. The gold diggers/mail order brides/social climbers that Filipinos are known for. The women would latch themselves to old, fat, western men for a chance of a better life instead of working. I have been confronted by this phenomena by a lot of my foreign colleagues and this is a top concern for me coz it makes our women look so cheap. I am so ashamed whenever this topic is brought up but I can’t make up any excuse for this phenomenon. I hope the government bans the sexpat and mail order bride industry.
  3. OFW phenomenon, most OFWs are known for working in jobs that are looked down upon by most people, but because of economic realities some Filipinos have to do it. Over time Filipinos have been associated with this kind of low level work and it damages the Filipino identity. Filipinos are getting synonymous with house servant, so shameful.
  4. The lack of discipline and disorganization. Filipinos don’t care much about cleaning the environment, so the cities are polluted with so much trash.
  5. Squatters and their pagpag is another thing to be ashamed about. I hate our current system which is just patterned after the US. I wish our system was more like China’s coz our situation is out of control, we need very tough measures to fix our country, we can’t keep on relying on the oligarchs and other private institutions to help us out, and clearly it hasn’t helped us.
  6. Western Liberal Democracy. Filipinos value democracy over fixing problems. so the crime rate is higher due to this imported thinking, a lot of basic necessities are lacking due to focusing more on individual rights instead of the collective good.
  7. The tambay culture. Seriously, get a job, any job.
  8. Our economy sucks, it lags behind most of Asia. But we don’t want to change our economic model coz we want to be like the Americans so much, even though the Chinese system is working for 1.4 billion people.
  9. Catholicism/Christianity and Islam. The religious fanaticism displayed by a lot of Filipinos is downright embarrassing, it is just superstition. These two Abrahamic religions from the Middle East has brought nothing of value to Philippine culture in my opinion. It has brought so much misery, bloodshed, violence, superstition, division, hate and suffering. Catholicism teaches people that being poor brings them closer to God, really? Having these religions takes away the ability of people to think and solve problems using their brain and instead asks God to do everything for them. When the Filipinos commit bad things, they would just ask their God for forgiveness, ok, wow. Filipinos leave everything to their God and don’t do much to fix their problems, they also see suffering as a sign of worship to their God. In the case of Islam, their God has been used as an excuse to commit horrendous acts of violence, and the worst victims are usually just other Muslims…. East Asian countries have lower crime rates and yet they don’t follow Islam or Christianity, most of them are atheist, agnostic or at least irreligious, that means these two Abrahamic religions fail at making Filipinos better people, so they are indeed useless. Not only that, Christianity has been used as a tool to subjugate the Filipinos, until today most Filipinos still pray to white idols. The Catholic Church also always gets in the way of important legislation like death penalty, divorce, access to reproductive services, drug war, etc.
  10. The Philippines. I have never liked this name. I can’t relate to Philip. He was a colonizer and we should not name our country after a foreign imperialist monarch. I am ashamed to call myself a name that comes from the country that oppressed my ancestors, let alone its leader. I don’t identify with this name at all. Don’t we have any sense of dignity? How can we name ourselves after an oppressor?
