Was the war on drugs a war on the poor?

It always has hit poor people disproportionally hard.

Back when I was living in the Philippines, President Rodrigo Duterte was waging a furious “war on drugs”. His youngest son, Baste Duterte, was openly posting photos smoking marijuana… meanwhile Duterte senior sent death squads into desperately poor slums, executing drug dealers and users without trial.

It’s always been a rich man’s game, drugs. The well-off musicians and artists smoke marijuna. Senators, captains of industry and men of means will primarily do cocaine. The poorest of the poor will do meth, or heroin, and will get hooked on whatever bottom-of-the-barrell trash the local hustlers peddle on the street corner… whereas the rich and powerful will partake in designer drugs, or pay some private doctor a hefty fee to subscribe them all sorts of fancy “medication” they needed to uplift their moods…

The war on drug always seem to target some poor white redneck, some inner city black kids or some unemployed nobody on a reservation. Never the senator’s wife, never the billionaire CEO or the president’s son. The war on drugs always targets the poor… and the rich laugh all the way to the bank, their lines of coke and neatly arranged tablet dividers full of designer drugs awaiting them.
