Its origins date back to about 600 million years, as old as the Australian continent itself and today declared a UNESCO heritage site. It is considered sacred and magical by the Aboriginal people who have venerated Uluru for at least 30,000 years. Australians cannot deny its charm; the rock is considered mystical, powerful in magic and historically and culturally rich. Uluru is 346 meters high and is 2 miles long and wide.
But what makes Uluru special?
Physically, Uluru is an inselberg, a hill or mountain that rises from a plain.
It is made up of natural formations such as caves, canyons and pools of water. Adding to the feeling of magic is how Uluru changes color depending on the position of the sun. It is a huge red stone that turns into a magical vibrant pink at sunrise, shades of amber at midday and yellow ochre at sunset. But beyond the physicality, what makes this rock special is the history attached to it: around Uluru there are paintings and engravings of the first Aboriginal people.
