While many people are familiar with common diabetes complications like heart disease, nerve damage, and kidney issues, there are several lesser-known complications that deserve more attention:
Hearing Loss: Nerve and blood vessels of the ears may be affected by diabetes resulting in some form of hearing impairment.
Skin Conditions: Bacterial and fungal infections, dry skin disorders or conditions that are associated with this disease become compound, if not well handled.
Gum Disease: Hyperglycemia is known to foster the growth of bacteria which causes infection in the gum and other dental diseases.
Gastroparesis: This is a condition whereby the stomach stimulates contractions and delays the emptying time taking a longer time and this causes the feeling of full belly, nausea and irritation and unequal distribution of the blood flow. This particular disease may be manifest in those with chronic diabetic conditions.
Cognitive Decline: It is instead indicated that diabetes can put one at risk of developing certain cognitive problems, and even dementia, based on, among other things, the lower rates of blood flow to the brain as well as insulin resistance.
Vision Problems: In addition to retinopathy, diabetes commonly affects other structures in the eye including cataracts and glaucoma.
Joint Problems: In a diabetic patient, thickening of the connective tissues predisposes them to conditions such as frozen shoulder or carpal tunnel syndrome.
Knowledge about such less common but potentially very serious complications help in early management and prevention. These risks are easily avoidable by maintaining healthy check-ups and being very involved on our health issues.
