OK. This is not America, it’s Canada but the results are somewhat similar.
My Filipina common law wife is still married to her Filipino husband.
Until last year, you couldn’t get a divorce in the Philippines. Just an annulment that was super expensive, uncertain and involved lying.
So.
Once you are a permanent resident in Canada, I think for six months, you can divorce your Filipino husband. Recognized anywhere in the world outside the Philippines. Not cool if you have any intention to return to the Philippines as we do. So be patient to get a better result.
So wait until you become a Canadian citizen. The Philippines doesn’t recognize dual citizenship so by default when you become a Canadian you can divorce your Philippine husband, and as you are now a foreigner the divorce will be recognized in the Phils.
Then you can reapply for your Philippine citizenship which will automatically be granted by birth.
Done deal. Go on with your life. Patience is the key.
