It’s mostly just a very stupid decision from a strategic point of view.1] A lot of people don’t really “get” Joe Rogan and have this impression of him being a right-wing blowhard — he isn’t. Joe Rogan is a pretty liberal guy who has some wacky ideas, is big into conspiracy theories… but he’s also polite to a fault whenever doing an interview, and he is pleasant. Rogan makes all his guests appear “good”, whether it’s Bernie Sanders or Jordan Peterson or even Alex Jones.
In other words, if Kamala Harris goes on Joe Rogan, she’ll be allowed to talk, to say her piece, get her message out there. Just as Trump did when he went on Rogan. Just as anyone does, when they go on Rogan. And that’s valuable, regardless of what you think of the guy and his personal views. So what if he’s critical of vaccines and he has some odd characters on? It’s his thing. He’s big into UFOs and alien life and conspiracy theories, he is pretty critical of the government but he lets his guests talk. All of them. And that would include Harris.
His reach is MASSIVE too — just 11 hours in and Trump’s appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience already gathered over 10 million views.
That’s huge and cannot be understated. What did Kamala Harris do, while Trump was on Rogan? She had a rally with Beyoncé. Which seems, on the surface, to be a fairly sensible move in terms of outreach. But the numbers aren’t anywhere near as spectacular as those of Rogan. A video posted of the event got just half a million views — only 1/20th of Trump’s Rogan appearance did:
Kamala Harris rejecting an invitation to appear on Joe Rogan’s podcast doesn’t make her “unqualified for office”, that’s ridiculous. Joe Rogan had Alex Jones on, too, does his appearance on the show make him “fit for office”? Don’t make me laugh… this isn’t about fit or unfit. It’s about stupid versus smart strategic decisions.
Kamala Harris should have gone on the Joe Rogan podcast, too. And with well over a week to go before election day, she still can. It is obvious that Rogan has an enormous audience. And it would be foolish not to tap into that. It’s not as if the guy is going to ask “tough questions” — all you need to do is just banter with him for three hours in a relaxed setting while he puffs on a joint and nods and goes: “Wow, that’s crazy!”
