What surprised you this week?

A woman named Abby Hensel, 34, just got married to US army veteran Josh Bowling. Abby has a conjoined twin, Brittany Hensel. This is quite a remarkable marriage — the two sisters share one body. Each controls one leg, one arm. They have their own head, their own mind, thoughts, hopes and dreams. But they also share on reproductive system.

And now, one of the twins is married. The other is not. But in everything her sister does, from here on out, she’ll be a part of. Thankfully Abby and Brittany have the same dreams for the future — each sister wants to get married and have children. This wouldn’t be a historical first, as the famous Chang and Eng Bunker, the world’s first well-known case of “Siamese Twins”, married as well.

Chang and Eng, born in modern-day Thailand (then called Siam, hence the name “Siamese Twins”) both married a Southern white woman in America. They went from sideshow ‘freaks’ touring around to independent businessmen. Chang and Eng had 10 and 11 healthy kids by their wives, respectively and both men lived to relatively old ages.

The love life of conjoined twins is remarkable. And it does show you that there’s some truth to the age old cliche of “there’s someone for everyone”. And for some people, to get with your ‘someone’, there will be someone else always around, too. Love, like life itself, finds a way.
