Nobody aside from Mr. J.D. Vance himself knows the answer to this question. Aside from, perhaps, his wife Usha Vance. It is funny, though — male makeup is seen as unmasculine in the current zeitgeist, and Vance belongs to the party that claims to be all about masculinity. Things weren’t always like this, however…
Historically speaking, makeup was a manly affair. From the French kings to Giacomo Casanova himself, everyone wore powdered wigs and all faces were powdered to such a degree it’d put a geisha to shame. And these weren’t wilting flowers — 17th and 18th century men were hardcore drunks and womanizers, the lot of them. Going back to a more recent time, we find the glamrock stars of yore. From Alice Cooper to the guys from Kiss, Bowie, Jagger, all of these fellows got around. A new lady every night. Sometimes a dude. Who cares, it’s that special type of sex, drugs and rock ’n roll lifestyle. A lifestyle as rough and tumble as it is strangely forgiving.
But in the year 2024, a man who sometimes wears eyeliner is now “suspicious”. Especially in the circles Mr. Vance finds himself in. I think he’s just trying to make his bright blue eyes ‘pop’, to tell you the truth. His best buddy and the man responsible for funding Vance’s education and political career, gay billionaire Peter Thiel, might just like his eyes that way — fierce.
