In 2016, a French anti-corruption law passed in France. The so-called “Sapin II Act” was instated to prevent people convicted of graft, corruption or embezzlement of government funds to run for office. And Marine Le Pen, confident in her ability to hide her own corruption, voted in favor of the law.
Just a year later she was revealed as a Kremlin asset, her political campaign entirely funded by a Moscow based bank. And now, she has been convicted of graft and embezzlement, herself, making her unable to run for office. She was perfectly okay with laws that would forbid corrupt political rivals from participating in elections — now that she, herself, has been convicted, her followers predictably bleat about how the whole thing is “a conspiracy”… how very unsurprising.
Marine Le Pen embezzled over four million euros in European Union funds. For this, she has to pay a hefty fine and serve a two-year sentence, which she may do under house arrest. Another piece of the domino falls. It’s a shame the right seems incapable of coming up with any leaders lately that aren’t Kremlin assets, but this is the sad state of affairs.
