Anthony Hopkins has been sober for 50 years.
Before that, he was a heavy drinker. In a recent interview, he described the moment he decided never to drink again — it was after getting into his car, black-out drunk, and not even remembering how he got home in one piece and managed to park the car without damage.
Hopkins realized that he could have killed someone, which shocked him. He also could have died, himself, and that last one didn’t bother him one bit… because he rather loathed himself, in that moment. And he decided right there and then that he would never touch the devil’s liquid ever again. And he didn’t.
He had a selfless realization of the danger drinking can cause. Not everyone has that, sadly. Each year, about 12,000 drivers die in alcohol-related crashes in America alone. And worse yet, over 1200 innocent people die because they’re hit by a drunk driver each year.
