What is it like in the Philippines in the midst of Super Typhoon Haiyan?

Heartbreaking.

  • People who were affected by an earthquake last August have not even started to recover. They are still on evacuation centers, some living on tents, most rely on relief goods.
  • Schools and houses not more than 2 km away from my home are still submerged in water due to a storm (far weaker than Haiyan) a few months ago.
  • Communities devastated by Typhoon Bopha late in 2012 have not fully recovered. See: Typhoon Pablo Photos
  • Napoles will be forgotten along with the pork barrel scam

This is also the first time ( at least in my memory) people evacuated before the landfall. Usually, people only evacuate when it's too late.

My location is not on the actual path of Haiyan so I don't get to experience it on its full power. Based from the news, it looks like it's as strong as advertised though.

Update:

You may just skip to the footages.

  • 3:37 - A father carrying his dead daughter.
  • 6:46 - The news team took shelter on a Cathedral (Church). They thought it was the safest place. The reporter broke in tears. She grew up in Leyte. Her family lives there.
  • 9:59 - The cathedral getting shredded.
  • More dead people are still unaccounted
