An 83 year old friend (at the time) remodeled her home so that she could continue to live there if/when she reached a time she couldn’t live on her own. She made a kind of studio area for her to live in privately (with access to her backyard), and a separate bedroom with bath for a caregiver to live in if needed. Removed internal steps, replaced with gentle ramps. Added support bars to bathrooms and consulted with experts to determine how to keep herself as safe and independent as possible. At age 86, she’s doing ok still, but had a scare a few weeks ago, making her glad to have her home ready to avoid assisted living or nursing home environments. She is prepared to spend what she has left to make herself comfortable, knowing she won’t leave much for her daughters but also knowing that she won’t have to worry about her own care. If you don’t have the resources to do this for yourself, contact a local council on aging that helps people stay in their homes. Most areas have assistance.
