What do you eat for snacks in Philippines?

I think we have a lot of choices for snacks here in the Philippines, specifically in Metro Manila. There are a lot of big chain supermarkets, 24/7 convenience stores, Korean and Japanese mini-marts and neighborhood sari-sari (wide variety) stores. Here are some of my favorites:

Let’s start with native Filipino snacks:

Halo halo - literally means “assorted” and/or “mixed”. It is a dessert made of sweet bananas, sweet potatos, ube, leche flan, colorful tapioca pearls, sweet red mung beans, gelatin, jackfruit, rice crispies, ice cream and a multitude of other possible ingredients over shaved ice topped with evaporated milk. Some restaurants that serve this colorful dessert are Chowking, Razon’s and Mesa.

Turon - sliced saba bananas and bits of sweetened jackfruit slices enveloped in egg roll wrappers, generously sprinkled with brown sugar then deep fried. Sometimes served with a dash of cinnamon or sesame seeds. You can get some of these at The Kanin Club or at any SM or Robinsons Supermarket food stalls.

Binatog - boiled white corn with freshly grated coconut. You either put salt or sugar depending on your preference. Sometimes available in food courts.

Banana Q - whole saba bananas rolled in brown sugar, fried and skewered. You can get these at foodcourts.

Now here are some of my go to chips and other snacks which can be bought at supermarkets, 24/7 convenience stores and even Amazon US:

Pillows - Ube (purple yam) flavored bite sized snacks. The outer layer is a crunchy and spongy wafer that holds the buttery and distinctly ube flavored center. It’s available at most supermarkets and convenience stores.

Chef Tony’s Mochachino Popcorn - gourmet popcorn coated in mochachino and mixed with whole salted almonds. Available at most major supermarkets and malls.

Nova - similar to Sun Chips. It is made from corn, wheat, rice and oats. My favorite flavor is the Country Cheddar one but there are a couple of other flavors worth trying as well. Available at most supermarkets, 24/7 convenience stores and neighborhood sari-sari stores.

Salted Egg Potato Chips - Oishi potato chips are my favorite. These are flavored with salted duck egg yolks and curry leaves. Other flavors that I like are sea salt, wasabi and kimchi. Available at most major supermarkets.

Marty’s Cracklin’ - these are vegan chicharons (pork cracklings) and I like them sour and spicy. Available at most major supermarkets and 24/7 convenience stores.

Melona - these are Korean brand fruit flavored ice cream bars. Great during those hot summer days. Available at most major supermarkets and Korean mini-marts.

Pinipig Crunch - a vanilla or chocolate flavored popsicle wrapped in a crispy chocolate coating that is sprinkled with rice crispies. Available at most mahor supermarkets and 24/7 convenience stores.
