Chinese Embassy in Manila Welcomes Ban On Declaration

A Chinese diplomat said on Thursday that the ban on overseas online gaming businesses operating in the Philippines was a "welcome development."

The comments came in response to media questions at a press briefing by a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Manila, the Philippine capital.

"We have noted President Marcos' announcement to ban all POGOs and welcome these developments," the diplomat, who did not give his name in a statement, also said in a written statement from the Chinese mission

On Monday, Philippine leader President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGO), now known as IGLs, would have to finish their operations in the Philippines by the end of the year.

Mr. Marcos suggested that some operators "have ventured into the most remote illegal territory of the game: financial fraud, money laundering, prostitution, human trafficking, kidnapping, brutal torture, and even murder."

In response to the national leader's announcement, the Chinese embassy cited criticism of the online offshore sector within the Philippines, including a former Supreme Court judge. "We believe this decision reflects the needs of the Filipino people and serves the common interests of the people of both countries."

The envoy added, "Chinese law prohibits all forms of gambling. The Chinese government strictly regulates Chinese people engaged in overseas gambling businesses, including POGO."

"The decree creates serious crimes and seriously undermines the interests of both the Philippines and the Chinese people," the statement said. "In line with this commitment, China remains ready to continue strong law enforcement cooperation with the Philippines and better protect the safety and welfare of the people of both countries."

In April, Beijing said it was working with Philippine authorities on issues related to online gambling, which it claimed were "victims of off-the-board gambling."

Still, the Philippine government said in May that it was tightening visa rules for Chinese tourists, arguing that some Chinese were targeted by criminal groups to work in what local authorities call illegal offshore game operators.
