Frankly its awesome.
If I was living in a big Western city like London/Sydney/Toronto/LA the lifestyle I live here would cost me at least 300K a year. My wife and I live a money no object lifestyle for a budget of around $4000/month. We never, ever think about what something costs here. We take frequent short trips all over Asia, to Bali, Saigon, Hanoi, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc.
Last night we ate noodles on the street for $2 each at this place. Life changing noodles.
Tonight we will eat michelin starred omokase sushi at Ginza Sushi Ichi, fish flown today from the Tokyo fish market, probably will cost $500. It all evens out, most of what you do is so cheap, you don’t worry when it’s time to treat yourself.
Bangkok is the best restaurant city in the world, bar none, there are over 130 Michelin star restaurants within 30 minutes travel. The women are beautiful, charming and available. It’s mostly safe, and once you stop acting like a tourist and learn some Thai people stop trying to scam you.
The public transport works well, you don’t want to have a car here. It’s not “third world” as you might think, the inner city looks like Hong Kong or Shanghai. Taxis are so cheap it’s obscene.
I don’t drink and party, but if that’s your thing, Bangkok can make Las Vegas look very tame. Whatever your perversion, you can find it in Bangkok. For example I used to live next door to a famous brothel that specialises in ass licking. If you want your butthole cleaned… that’s the place for you!
Of course, outside of Bangkok things can get a little bit third world, for me the only other suitable living place is Chiang Mai, and… not really.
You want a pro tip for moving to Bangkok? Go to http://aretethailand.com/en/home/ and join. I got to plug into a complete social life with Thai, Japanese and westerners... really cool healthy, well adjusted people who showed me how to live a high quality life here. Changed my life, and made the experience of moving painless. Also, you should learn Thai, the experience is way more enjoyable, and it increases your potential dating pool by a factor of 10. A good school is Thai Language School Bangkok
If you move to Thailand, don’t be like the loser sexpats who try and recreate their own life on the cheap, but with more whores. That’s a loser path.
Moving to Bangkok is a once in a lifetime opportunity to rebuild your life from scratch, and build a life worthy of emulation.
The only real problem is that there is a syndrome of “zero in England, hero in Thailand”. You want to make sure you aren’t becoming a loser by hanging with losers here. The best way to do that is to not live in the “Sukhomvit bubble” around the tourist areas, which are dirty, smelly, and filled with prostitutes.
